I was born and raised in Bay Shore, NY, one of the best towns on the South Shore of Long Island, and the location for the main ferry docks that serve Fire Island. You’d think that living on an island would have prepared me for the seasonal rhythms of living on the Jersey Shore, but I was not prepared for just how fast the town would empty out after Labor Day.

 

I moved to Ocean City, NJ in 2024 with my wife, who is an OC native. We were fortunate to be able to buy a house in the neighborhood where she grew up, at the far south end of the island (the best part of the island, in my opinion), and have thoroughly enjoyed all that island living has to offer.

 

We are one of a handful of families that reside in our neighborhood year round, and over the years my seasonal neighbors would ask if they could leave a spare key and have me check on their homes occasionally. As I am approaching retirement from education in the next few years, I thought it would be a good time to see if I could make a formal business out of my ad hoc services. Many of my neighbors have become friends over the years, and I know how much their vacation homes mean to their families.
